I had the luxury and privilege to shoot this commercial shoot here in Vietnam Mui Ne!
I pitched this idea to the client using my Instagram photos taken during my trip to Mount Bromo. Well, we were supposed to have this shoot at Mount Bromo, however it erupted 5 days before the shoot!
We brainstormed a few ideas and the client wanted to go to Sahara Desert, but that was way out of budget.
Mui Ne has been my bucket list for quite some time and i proposed to the client immediately. (i was supposed to go Mui Ne 4 years ago, missed the stop and ended up at Da lat – more on this on Vietnam post!)
The idea was sold immediately! I truly believe that you can definitely pitch to any potential clients with your personal photos! this was not the first time 🙂
I have been to Sahara desert in Morocco and honestly the sand dune in Vietnam is much nicer! The Sahara desert is mostly flat – at least where the tour brings you that’s why you can just travel by camel.
However, the dunes in Vietnam, the only way to travel is by jeep!
You can imagine how steep and large the dunes are! And there is a lake right in the middle!
Mui Ne is located at the coast and just 2 hours flight from Singapore.
If you are traveling from Ho Chi Minh, it is just 4 hours by coach and cost only USD$8.
The team and I flew directly in to Mui Ne and check in to this luxurious resort, The Sailing Bay Resort which has our own private beach. It was just USD40/room then (2016) now it has increased to USD100! The garden and building is colonial inspired.
For developing countries like Myanmar, Vietnam and Laos which has just opened their doors to the world for less than10 years, please visit them NOW! Before the beautiful beaches and attractions are exploited by tourists. Book them now!
We spent the night fitting gowns, make up and hair, syncing up with the whole team before the big shoot the next morning. We had the video team from Malaysia, model from Indonesia and clients and myself flew in from Singapore, and this was the first time we all met. We call the pre-production meeting.
Everything need to be to decided, there is no room for trial and error on set. This goes from accessories, head gear, schedule, the run down of which gown to shoot, the color of the makeup, the post-production editing, how the final edit will be as this will determine the type of lighting setup.
To the Sand dune
We departed at 5.30am the next day as we wanted to capture the sun rise and I have a total of 20 photos to shoot in 8 hours, that was a lot.
The drive was just 30min from The Sailing Bay Resort. There was absolutely no one at the sand dune except for us for the whole day! (2016)
Mui Ne sand dune is located right at the sea and stretches for 10km. The only way to go around the sand dune was by jeep!
Oh it was so cold (20 degree) and the wind was so strong, we were dressed for summer and we almost froze.
And if you are wondering, yes we did bring the poles and props all the way from Singapore! Hand carried all the way to the sand dunes and assembled on the spot. If you are keen in knowing what goes into a fashion shoot or how to prep for an overseas shoot, drop me a message below! 🙂
Lastly, i will leave you all with the epic photos I took and the behind the scene shot by the video team!
